چکیده

Five separate test sites were established in 1994 to evaluate the use of municipal sewage sludge as a soil amendment and conditioner (hereafter referred to as “biosolids”) on the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation’s tailings impoundment near Magna, Utah. Each site was divided into 16 test plots to evaluate four replications of the four rates of biosolids addition and incorporation into the tailings. The sites were monitored for potential leaching of total heavy metals as required under 40 CFR 503, agronomic properties, total metals, extractable metals, plant tissue analysis for heavy metals, biomass production, percent cover and plant species diversity. This paper presents the results through the second year of the project to include a comparison of soils and vegetation properties versus changes in the properties after two growing seasons. All agronomic properties of the tailings showed continued improvement following the initial biosolids addition. Significant improvements were seen when comparing the control plots to all treated plots. A statistically significant continued improvement in biomass production and percent cover by plant species occurred for all biosolids application rates when compared to the control plots. These important long-term reclamation objectives are related to the increase in biodiversity as well as to the amount of dead vegetation (winter rye) left from the 1995 growing season.

Phytostabilization of Mine Tailings in Arid and Semiarid Environments—An Emerging Remediation Technology

OBJECTIVE Unreclaimed mine tailings sites are a worldwide problem, with thousands of unvegetated, exposed tailings piles presenting a source of contamination for nearby communities. Tailings disposal sites in arid and semiarid environments are especially subject to eolian dispersion and water erosion. Phytostabilization, the use of plants for in situ stabilization of tailings and metal contamin...

Accelerated weathering of biosolid-amended copper mine tailings.

Application of municipal biosolids to mine tailings can enhance revegetation success, but may cause adverse environmental impacts, such as increased leaching of NO3- and metals to ground water. Kinetic weathering cells were used to simulate geochemical weathering to determine the effects of biosolid amendment on (i) pH of leachate and tailings, (ii) leaching of NO3- and SO4(2-), (iii) leaching ...

Jarosite versus Soluble Iron-Sulfate Formation and Their Role in Acid Mine Drainage Formation at the Pan de Azúcar Mine Tailings (Zn-Pb-Ag), NW Argentina

Secondary jarosite and water-soluble iron-sulfate minerals control the composition of acid mine waters formed by the oxidation of sulfide in tailings impoundments at the (Zn-Pb-Ag) Pan de Azúcar mine located in the Pozuelos Lagoon Basin (semi-arid climate) in Northwest (NW) Argentina. In the primary zone of the tailings (9.5 wt % pyrite-marcasite) precipitation of anglesite (PbSO4), wupatkite (...

Case History of a Copper Mine Tailings Pond Reclamation in Ducktown, Tennessee

Cessation of mining operations in Ducktown, TN, left 800-900 acres of barren copper mine tailings. Revegetation activities had met with limited success. In 1998, efforts for revegetation of the tailings materials began anew. The objective of this case history is to provide insight into decision making processes which resulted in conversion of 800-900 acres of barren mine tailings into a vegetat...
